Indoenesia has more birds and bees, forest and trees than practically any other country on earth. In fact , it rank fourth in the world for biodiversity. However , unless conservation is much better managed and more widespread this incredible biodiversity will countinue to decline. The World Conservation Union (IUCN) maintains a global list of critically endangered species, and this list includes the Javan Rhino, the Silvery Gibbon and the Sumatran Orangutan. Tigers are also endangered, as are three kinds of marine turtles. Overall , of the 436 mammals found in Indonesia, a third of them are threatened. Reasons are many and each organization involved in the protection of the environment has its own point of view.
Walhi (Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia or the Indonesian Forum for the Environment) is the Indonesian branch of the International group Friends of the Earth, the largest environmental federation in the world. Walhi , with 438 memner organizations , view environmental threats in terms of macro geo-politics. To them world demand for natural resources such as wood and palm oil has contributed to environment degradation in Indonesia and the current industrial harvesting practices are not sustainable. Longgena Ginting the Walhi executive director , stated “economic models of development are roots of environmental problems” and point to this one-sided concept of “progress” as creating an imbalance between nature and development. Walhi works at the national level to create positive balanced environtment policies for senior geverment leaders. However the threaths are macro , Walhi see a big part of the solution as micro and they to empower local communities to take responsibility for the surrounding environment and to be stewards of recources , instead of exploiters.
The Indonesian branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is another key environmental organization. From a menu of six global WWF initiatives, WWF-Indonesia concentrates on four forestry, marine programs, endangered species and climate change. WWF and Walhi are not the only two organizations involved in coenservation. Besides Walhi there are fourteen local groups listed like Rimbawan Muda Indoesia has had program that study bamboo ethno botany , ecotourism for basic communities and development of energy plantations.
